Four generations have produced McCandlish Farmhouse Confectionery’s nationally renowned sweet treats, beloved by Scots for decades.
And this year’s times of crisis have prompted the nation’s nostalgia – with people discovering a renewed appetite for their childhood favourites.
Owner Agnes Gough (nee McCandlish), who took over the running of the company earlier this year after her father passed, has overseen the launch of an online shop so fans can find their confectionery of choice after the loyal client base of local shops was forced to close.
In September, a Facebook post by the owner of sweet shop BonBon Peterhead, Fiona Chalmers, went viral helping to spark the revival of Creamola Foam. Sales have since soared at the family-run firm, which makes all its confectionery by hand.
“We went from producing two to three thousand tins of Creamola Foam a month to making that amount each day,” says Agnes of the iconic fizzy, fruity, foamy fun drink. “We had a 351 per cent increase in sales last month and we’ve now added new limited edition Christmas flavours.
“We’re always listening to our customers: if people want an old sweet revived, we’ll bring it back. I had a request from a customer who has Crohn’s disease and can’t have sweeteners, so we made her up a special batch without sweeteners that is now available on our website.”
Thanks to the boom in business, McCandlish Farmhouse Confectionery – which will celebrate its 60th anniversary next year – has been able to take on additional local staff, and Agnes is now eyeing more global sales.
“We had never sold directly to the public before this year, but so many people were calling us when their local shops were closed that we opened up online and now the company is just getting bigger and bigger,” she said.
“But we’re very careful not to undercut the shops who sell our products. Sometimes it takes a crisis like this to pull everyone together and I couldn’t be luckier with my customers in shops all over Scotland. It’s such a lovely community.”
