World Porridge Day: A traditional breakfast

IN days gone by, porridge was considered the ‘pauper’s food’.

But that has changed, as this traditional Scottish breakfast is now appearing on five-star menus up and down the country and is rumoured to be the essential morning start for everyone from Madonna and Nicole Kidman to Nigella Lawson and Bill Gates.

As we head towards the close of a year that has put our food and drink industry on a global platform and move ever closer to the Year of Food and Drink, what better time to celebrate one of our country’s classic foods with World Porridge Day.

The ‘how do you eat yours’ question is one that comes with many strong opinions. Some believe that ‘proper porridge’ is only made on the stove with water and salt while others like to be more adventurous, adding everything from lemon curd to flaxseeds to spice up their breakfast.
