Before you set off in their footsteps, you’ll be brought fully up to speed on the tribulations of both Bonnie Prince Charlie and his loyal acolytes with a private guided tour of the remarkable new exhibition Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites at the National Museum of Scotland, Edinburgh.

Private Audience in the Palace of Prince Charlie

The Palace of Holyroodhouse makes for a fascinating visit, not least of all for offering an insight into Bonnie Prince Charlie’s lifestyle during his brief time in Scotland before his ill-fated military campaign in England.

Your prize includes an after-hours, private tour of the Palace, allowing you a unique insight into the Prince’s residence at Holyroodhouse without having to share the experience with any other visitors.

You’ll also enjoy exclusive tours of Leith Hall, where many Jacobite artefacts are located, Stirling Castle, which the Jacobites singularly failed to capture, and the magnificent 13th century fortress Fyvie Castle.

A meal to remember at Rhubarb

The restaurant Rhubarb, at Prestonfield House, may have a reasonable claim to being the most romantic dining setting in Scotland. The two 17th century oval rooms are sumptuous, richly decorated with brocade, and gorgeously baroque. The food is every bit as opulent. You’ll enjoy a gourmet à la carte dinner (with accompanying wine), sampling modern dishes that showcase the very best produce Scotland has to offer.

Fit for a king (or a bonnie prince)

Ever hankered after a night in a bona fide castle? How about three castles?

First, the breathtaking Inverlochy Castle – a country house hotel overlooking a loch, that’s played host to such luminaries as Charlie Chaplin, Sean Connery and the King of Jordan. After a night of blissful slumber, you’ll be taken on a private tour of the Glenfinnan Monument, to spy where Bonnie Prince Charlie started his campaign in 1745.

There’s also a night’s stay in the 5-star Fasque Castle self-catering cottages, in Aberdeenshire. A 400-acre estate built around a baronial mansion, the lush landscape boasts deer, red squirrels, otters and eagles.

And since a taste for castles, once acquired, is hard to shake, there will be two nights at the Courtyard Cottage, an intimate 16th century apartment at Drum Castle, just outside Aberdeen. The very site where Alexander Irvine, 17th Laird of Drum who fought at the Battle of Culloden was hidden in a secret room after defeat to avoid capture from the Redcoats.

And all mod-cons

You won’t be slumming it when you’re not in castles: it’s luxury all the way for the lucky winner. You’ll also stay in Edinburgh’s exclusive Prestonfield House, where you’ll be greeted with champagne in your room, and Inverness’s boutique Rocpool Reserve, a renovated Georgian mansion house with views over the River Ness. Both are 5-star stays.

The last crusade (in Culloden)

Fancy yourself the Caledonian answer to Indiana Jones? Here’s your chance to flex your archaeological muscles first-hand.

You and your travel partner will be treated to a private archaeological experience at the Culloden battlefield. You’ll then receive a weapons handling session: have a spin on a basket-hilted sword before wielding the fearful Lochaber axe. Experience the drama of one of Scotland’s most bloody battles.

A spy In the House of Dun

Something of a sleuth? The tour of the House of Dun will tantalise your curiosity. An atmospheric Georgian manse, this home was built for David Erskine, 13th Laird of Dun. Ostensibly a supporter of the Hanoverian monarchy, David was descended from John Erskine, a fervent Jacobite.

There are subtle signs of David’s allegiance to the Jacobite cause throughout the stunning house – white roses, symbolising the cause, or an image of Poseidon on his sea chariot, which is argued to represent Bonnie Prince Charlie’s arrival from over the sea. It’s up to you and your companion to decipher the clues in the ornate surroundings.

Keep your historical education going

Once you’ve had your six glorious days filled with the history of Bonnie Prince Charlie and the Jacobites, chances are high you’ll be hungering for more. Luckily, your prize includes a one-year family membership from Historic Environment Scotland, National Museums Scotland and National Trust for Scotland. You’ll be able to investigate other historical treasures across Scotland for the coming year.
