ONE of the most hotly-anticipated whisky events of the year is taking place in Edinburgh this weekend.

The Whisky Stramash aims to challenge the traditional “stuffy” whisky-associated events and promises to be full of mystery, entertainment, comicality and madcap pioneering, featuring chilling characters associated historically with the dram.

An affair to excite the purists, tempt the interested and intrigue the indifferent, enthusiasts of whisky from around the world will encounter many elements and experiences. Held in the historical Surgeons’ Hall, dram devotees will be exposed to a concoction of molecular experiments, murder mystery and an insight into the gruesome lives of barber surgeons.

Organiser Darroch Ramsay said: “We’re really quite passionate about it, there can be a certain ‘preciousness’ about whisky in the ndustry which we feel has led to people ordering vodka instead of our own Scottish made drink. We want to bring Whisky back.”

Star of ‘The Thick of It’ political satire show Peter Capaldi will also be taking a lead role in the event’s murder mystery play.

The Jura Murder Mystery features the gruesome demise of a fictitious Jura Distillery Manager - played by Capaldi - with the audience invited to guess the cultprit.

Representatives attending for the whisky industry include Glenfiddich, Jura, Balvenie, Bunnahabhain and Arran.

The Stramash will be held on three sessions over the 26th and 27th of May 2012:

Saturday 26th of May 2012: 12pm – 4pm and 5pm – 9pm and Sunday 27th of May 2012: 1pm – 5pm.
