GREENWOODS is expanding its range of restaurants to establish its third restaurant, its first outside the Netherlands, in Edinburgh, taking over the site formerly housing ‘The Wee Restaurant’ at 61 Frederick Street.
The new Dutch restaurant plans to open its doors in March 2021, building on its existing two sites in Amsterdam, Greenwoods Keizersgracht and Greenwoods Singel.
The latter celebrated its 32nd birthday this September as a classic English tearoom opened on the Singel canal in 1988. Greenwoods Singel was revamped by new management in 2010, who opened another English tearoom besides on the Keizersgracht canal two years later.
While details of Greenwoods’ first Scottish site remain shrouded in mystery for now, its canalside restaurants in Amsterdam are beloved by locals and tourists - offering delicious breakfasts and brunches that are sure to be a hit with Edinburgh’s New Town crowd.
Greenwoods’ website states “we have always done our best to source top quality local ingredients and make as much of our products fresh on the premises as possible”.
It also nods to fan favourites among their homemade and locally-sourced produce like its “famous homemade Irish Soda bread” divined by original Greenwoods founders Gabrielle Mary Wheeler and Janet Isabel Pratt.
Menus feature a variety of meat, fish, vegetarian and vegan options, with eggs a-plenty for breakfast and fusion bowls, burgers and bagels for lunch. Alongside the option of high tea for those fancying a traditional English treat are an abundance of cocktails, coffees and cakes.
An application for planning permission is with Edinburgh City Coouncil at the moment and is due to be considered in the near future.
Whatever turns up on their Scottish menu next year, Greenwoods’ launch of its first Scottish site - with Scottish manager Jennifer Nelson at the helm - will no doubt be highly anticipated as it takes over this Frederick Street hotspot in the heart of the capital.
