Earlier today, police confirmed that the body of the singer had been discovered near South Queensferry.

Fans have since responded to a Facebook message from the remaining members of the Scottish indie group sharing their pain and finding small chinks of light in a story that has shocked everyone.

“So sorry for your loss. As much as we, his fans, are grieving I can’t imagine the pain you are all going through. I’m glad you can at least find some comfort in knowing he is at peace,” said Joan Hanna on Facebook.

“Your music played a big part in saving my life when I wanted to die. I am crushed. My thoughts are with all of you and everyone else who loved Scott and his music,” said Ben Paterson.

One fan, Paul McKivitt commented, “Frightened Rabbit formed a huge part of my life from my late teens to the present day. Scott’s songwriting totally changed the way I look at the world and made me sad, happy, and hopeful all at the same time. I’ll never forget him and while I’m alive, I’ll make tiny changes to earth.”

“Scott’s lyrics have helped me through some really rough times and he was pretty much a hero and inspiration to me. My thoughts are with the friends and family. I drew this portrait of him a few months ago, hoping to use it for fundraising for mental health awareness,” said Cas Csaba Patvaros.

Dale Abbott posted on their Facebook page, said: “I’m truly heartbroken, such devastating news. We can never know the depths of despair that some people can find themselves in, always talk, always seek help. The statistics for young men under 40 are unacceptable in this day and age. He was only 36 years old and such an amazing talent, his music has helped me through some of my darkest times. ‘Be so good to everyone you love. It’s not a given.’ was his message. I feel so sad about this. Find your peace Scott, you did great.”

On Twitter too fans have talked about how he helped people talk about mental illness.

Davie commented, “The news about Scott Hutchison has really bothered me. Mental Health in this country is not cared for, Scott spoke about it, he sang about it, for years, yet still he felt like he had nobody.”

Amanda Park tweeted Scott, “You were an unrivalled lyrical genius and your words got me and countless others through some tough times, thank you. You will be sorely missed. #Frightened Rabbit National Suicide Prevention 08000 684 141. It’s not ok, not to be ok!”

“I listened to The Midnight Organ Fight in its entirety this morning. That album has always made me feel less alone because it made me know other people share the same feelings I do. Lots of tears shed this morning while I listened,” said Heather Murray on Facebook.

“If anyone needs me I’ll be listening to The Midnight Organ Fight and The Painting of a Panic Attack all day. The world lost a good one,” tweeted Samuel Facundo.
