Danny Boyle met David Bowie to make a personal plea to the reclusive star to take part in the Olympics opening ceremony.

The filmmaker included Bowie’s songs Starman and Heroes and a clip of his 1976 film, The Man Who Fell To Earth, in the event which included performances by Sir Paul McCartney and Mike Oldfield.

But Bowie did not appear in the opening spectacular seen by millions.

He has not performed live since 2006 and is rarely seen in public leading to rumours of possible ill-health, which have been denied by his spokesman.
