Following a petition by fan Mae Trumata, the directors said “we’re on it” and arranged the special screening in Edinburgh. Joe asked Mae to stand for a round of applause ahead of the screening. She said: “It was amazing – I didn’t expect that. I’m all giddy inside.

“I hoped this would happened and I am glad it did. This city really did deserve it.”

The new blockbuster brings together key characters from previous Avengers and Guardians of the Galaxy films to defeat powerful warlord Thanos, a villain billed as a “despot of intergalactic infamy.” It has already emerged that Edinburgh will provide the backdrop to one of the most dramatic sequences in the film.

Frank Ross, Edinburgh’s Lord Provost, said: “Avengers: Inifity Wars is one of the most anticipated blockbusters of the year and fans in Edinburgh are getting to sample it first.

“It is always exciting to see the city provide a backdrop for film and TV, and incredible to think the Avengers franchise will beam scenes of Edinburgh to thousands of cinema screens all over the world. It is testament to the fantastic efforts of Rosie Ellison at Film Edinburgh, council staff, our city centre businesses and citizens that the filming ran very smoothly.”
