My first car … Gareth Morinan

MY FIRST car was a nifty little red Mazda 323. It was christened ‘Luigi’, because that’s what the number plate spelt out (providing you rearranged the letters, squinted slightly, and imagined a 7 was an I).

It was a hand me down from my parents; like hand me down clothes the car was a little worn and frayed around the edges. Unlike hand me down clothes I paid several hundred pounds for it.

Disaster struck during a trip down to Newquay (for a spot of camping and capers). I was trying to open the boot, while not really paying attention, and I accidently twisted the key and it broke clean in half. We were stuck just off the M5 for hours waiting for the only key cutter in Devon to drive out to help us on a bank holiday weekend. Luckily we parked right next to a Little Chef. «
