Summers looks set to be busy for Outlander fans in Scotland with a wealth of events lined up to seize on the huge interest in the series

Here we look at 10 events across the country which look at the culture and history which underpin the books and television show.

Outlander Day

Highland Folk Museum, Newtonmore

Saturday June 9, from 10.30am

This 18th Century township featured as a location in the show with guests invited to step back in time to the time of the Jacobite rising. The day includes a demonstration from a local waulking group with talks from an expert in authentic Highland 18th Century dress and author Sarah Fraser, who will speak about her real life links to Clan Fraser. Fan group Inverness Outlanders will also be talking about their new Inverness map which points to locations used by Diana Gabaldon in her series of Outlander books.

Friday, August 17 to Sunday August 20

Herbalist Claire Mackay, who advised the Outlander team on 18th Century medicines, has twinned up with Gaelic Consultant Àdhamh Ó Broin, who also worked with the show, for this residential weekend of Gaelic and herbs.

A look at the Highland militia formed after the 1715 Jacobite uprising, when some Highland clans were creating defences for the government. The militia pledged allegiance to the King, but did they harbour secret Jacobite ambitions?

Bonnie Prince Charlie and Fountains of Red Wine

Linlithgow Palace

Limited dates between June 2 and September 15

Recount the steps of Prince Charles Edward Stuart as he visited Linlithgow Palace, which had long links to his ancestors, as he made his way to Edinburgh. Accounts claim the fountain in the courtyard flowed with red wine to welcome the Young Pretender.

Doune Castle, Stirlingshire

With Doune Castle posing as Castle Leoch in the hit show, the Stirlingshire pile is enjoying rising visitor numbers. Guests this summer will get the chance to increase their understanding of the history that underpins the series with a numbers of events. Here, redcoat recruitment and training will be explored.

Visitors will meet a Jacobite guard and learn the role the castle played as a prison for redcoat soldiers during the 1745 Rising.

The life of a Jacobite clansman will be explored with visitors able to handle weaponry and equipment from the period.

Garrisoned for George

Corgarff Castle, Aberdeenshire

Saturday July 21 and Sunday July 22

Visitors will learn how Corgarff Castle, located in a commanding position on The Lecht road, passed between Jacobite and government control. After the government victory at Culloden, soldiers were stationed here to patrol for Jacobite sympathisers and whisky smugglers.

Battle of Prestonpans anniversary re-enactement

Witness the dramatic events of the Bonnie Prince Charlie’s first battle, as the Jacobite Highlanders claim victory over the redcoats of Sir John Cope.
