Nostlagia: From this week in the past

Tying the knot for Edinburgh couple Andrew Baird and Lynne Harkess was a relative success on March 13, 1993.

The groom’s cousin decided to make it a family affair – by offering to marry them. Dorothy Ewen got through dozens of weddings a year in her job as assistant registrar at Queen Street Registrar’s Office.

“I knew Andrew and Lynne were marrying at this office, so I asked if I could perform the ceremony,” she said. “I was very nervous – this was the first time my family have seen me marrying people.”

Lynne added: “She is such a lovely person – she really made us feel at ease. I would recommend getting married by Dorothy to anyone.”
