Nostlagia: From this week in the past

Lesley Hodge was in for a surprise as she pedalled to work along a new cycleway established on Middle Meadow Walk.

That’s because on March 24, 1983, the path was left in ruins by Scottish Gas workers – just two days after it had opened following five years of campaigning.

Ms Hodge, 25, was thrown out of gear that morning as she cycled to her office at the City Chambers.

As she dismounted to negotiate the obstacles, she said: “We have waited so long for this cycleway, only to have it dug up after a couple of days.” Scottish Gas said: “We didn’t realise a cycleway had been established there.”
