Nostalgia: From this week in the past

The 2nd Battalion Scots Guards marked the move to their new quarters with a ceremonial march from Redford Infantry Barracks at Colinton on this day 20 years ago.

The battalion’s new £3.5 million base was being opened about a mile away at Dreghorn Barracks and featured a swimming pool and gym, with sleeping quarters vastly improved.

Instead of dormitory-style barracks housing up to 30 soldiers, they were now to live in modern four-man clusters. The new barracks had been refurbished over two years and could accommodate up to 600 men.
