Nostalgia: The best days of your life

Whether you skipped happily to the school gates every day, or simply skipped school completely in favour of hanging out with friends, we all have plenty of stories to tell from the so-called best days of our lives.

For pupils of Castlebrae Community High in Craigmillar, memories might be all they have left, however, as education chiefs plough ahead with plans to close it.

If city council officials get their way, the school will close its doors this summer, leaving behind a host of unhappy parents and pupils who are fighting to save it.

And it will join a long line of Edinburgh schools which now only have a place in the history books. St Francis was another Craigmillar school which was recently closed to make way for a joint campus school in the area.

Back in 1954, the primary on Peffermill Road was dubbed “Edinburgh’s smallest school” as children were photographed eating their lunch in an old tin building which was used as an annexe.

Pupils from St Francis were also captured having a fun day out at Craigmillar Castle in June 1971.

The children took part in the Border Ballads at the Craigmillar Festival to commemorate the bicentenary of Sir Walter Scott.

Royston Primary is another school which closed its doors in recent years, bringing to an end decades of memories.

In 1963, the whole school community posed for a photograph outside the now demolished building before taking part in the annual sports day.
