From Shetland to Lewis and the Borders to the West Highlands, the list contains some popular choices and some lesser-known gems.

12. Belhaven Bay, Dunbar
This sweep of sand runs for nearly two miles on the fringes of John Muir Country Park. Known for its surfing, it's backed by the park's romantic tableau of sand dunes, salt marsh and woodlands.
