Two more people die from coronavirus in the UK

Two more patients have died in the UK after testing positive for coronavirus, taking the total to 10.

In a statement, Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust said: "We can confirm that, sadly, an 89-year-old patient who was very unwell with underlying health conditions has passed away at Charing Cross Hospital.

"The patient had tested positive for coronavirus. Our thoughts and condolences are with the patient's family."

The number of coronavirus cases in the UK has reached 590 - up 134 in the last 24 hours.

Tony Chambers, interim chief executive, Barking, Havering and Redbridge University Hospitals NHS Trust, said another patient had died at Queen's hospital.

He said: "We can confirm that a patient, who was in her 60s, and who tested positive for COVID-19 has sadly died at Queen's hospital. She had been very unwell with significant other health conditions.

"Our thoughts and condolences are with the patient's family at what is undoubtedly a very distressing time.

"We ask that the family's privacy is respected".

Boris Johnson is expected to move to the delay phase of tackling the UK spread of COVID-19 as Ireland announced the closure of schools and tourist attractions.

Irish premier Leo Varadkar said schools, colleges and childcare facilities will close until March 29 as a result of the outbreak, which is now regarded as a global pandemic.

Museums, galleries and other tourist destinations will also close as a result of the action.

Mr Varadkar said: "I know that some of this is coming as a real shock and it is going to involve big changes in the way we live our lives.

"I know that I am asking people to make enormous sacrifices. We're doing it for each other."

The total number of COVID-19 cases in the Republic stands at 43 and there has been one death.
