Smokers offered lung ageing tests to help quit

Smokers in the Capital are to be offered lung ageing and carbon monoxide tests in a bid to help them quit the habit.

A team from the Scottish Government will offer the tests at various locations, including Asda supermarkets, this week.

It is estimated that there are 87,000 smokers in Edinburgh.

The team will visit Asda at the Jewel on Wednesday, the Gyle Centre on Thursday, Cameron Toll Shopping Centre on Friday and Asda at the Almondale Centre in Livingston next Saturday.

Minister for Public Health Michael Matheson said: “You can reduce the risk of a heart attack or coronary heart disease and it can also bring big savings.”

Asda has produced a shopping list showing how cigarette money could be otherwise spent.

Polly Jones, Asda’s Scottish corporate affairs manager, said: “We hope that offering advice in-store will make it easy for our customers to access the help they need to quit.”
