Senior medic warns junior doctors are being let down by lack of job opportunities

A LEADING physician has warned that trainee doctors are at the “end of their tether” over restricted career opportunities.Ian Anderson, president of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, said that trainees hoping to become consultants are “by no means assured” of a job at the end of their programme.

Speaking at the college’s Triennial Conference in Glasgow, Mr Anderson said: “It is ironic that politicians are intent on decentralising everything yet the NHS carries on a destructive path of obsessive centralisation.

“What we are seeing are trainees entering programmes with every expectation that with the hard work necessary to complete certification, they would embark on a career as a consultant. That seems nowadays to be by no means assured.

“No wonder many feel at the end of their tether.”
