Consumers should not try to get their five fruit and vegetables a day from juices and smoothies, said a food watchdog.

A new healthy eating guide launched by Food Standards Scotland (FSS) to tackle problems with the Scottish diet urges people to ditch food and drinks that are high in fat, salt and sugar.

In the wake of plans for a sugar tax, the Eatwell Guide recommends just 150ml of juice per day and has removed the picture of a fizzy drink can. It now recommends 6-8 glasses of water, milk and sugar-free drinks each day.

People are urged to eat less red and processed meat and only small amount of cakes, biscuits and crisps.

Heather Peace, of FSS, said the problem of diet-related ill-health spans generations.
