Risks of early menopause

HAVING an early menopause can double a woman's risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke later in life.

Research suggests the average age for the menopause is 51, but can occur years earlier, either naturally or due to surgical removal of the ovaries.

Study leader Dr Melissa Wellons, of the University of Alabama in the United States, said: "It is important for women to know that early menopause is a potential risk factor for cardiovascular disease. They can then work harder to improve modifiable risk factors, such as high cholesterol and blood pressure."
