Race for Life paints Glasgow pink

Thousands of women have taken part in a race to raise money for Cancer Research UK.

Race for Life kicked off at Glasgow Green at 9:30am yesterday, led by the charity’s guests of honour Danielle Dillon, 31, and Thea McNamee, 54, who are both cancer survivors.

Participants dressed up in fairy wings and feather boas, wearing “every shade of pink imaginable”. About 12,500 people were at the Glasgow Race for Life, said to be the UK’s largest.

Breast cancer survivor and grandmother of seven Mrs McNamee, from Blantyre, South Lanarkshire, completed the 5km course in 35 minutes.

She said: “You never know what’s round the corner and I feel lucky to have survived cancer, so it was my pleasure to take part in Race for Life and give something back.”

Ms Dillon, an office manager from Hamilton, South Lanarkshire, was diagnosed with Hodgkin’s lymphoma in October 2007 at the age of 26.

She took part for the fifth time with her mother, Caroline Bonar, and completed the course in 24 minutes.
