Probe launched into disabled protection

AN INQUIRY has been launched into measures taken by the police, schools and other public bodies to stop disabled people being harassed or attacked.

The Equality and Human Rights Commission warned it could take enforcement action if it found that organisations were failing in their duties.

At least one person appears in court every day charged with a crime against a disabled person, with almost half of cases involving violence, it was revealed.

Mike Smith, the inquiry's lead commissioner, said: "I urge disabled people and disabled people's organisations to help inform the inquiry about the types of harassment they experience."
