Ms Millar, who denies the charges, was sacked from her job at the hospital in 2009.

Mr Buchan, 41, told the hearing in Edinburgh that he saw his colleague hide what she was smoking behind her back.

He said: “She hurriedly got her mobile phone out and said she couldn’t get a signal.

“I had no doubt she was smoking cannabis – I recognised the smell.

“She hurriedly walked away. Smoke was actually still hanging in the air. Her behaviour was that of someone who had been caught in the act.”

The NMC panel was also told there had been previous reports about Ms Millar – who faces further charges she self-administered an anti-nausea drug – smoking cannabis.

The hearing continues.
