A police spokesman said: “Investigations are at an early stage following the death of a 75-year-old woman at the Western General Hospital.

“Officers attended after reports were received of a small fire in a room in one of the wards.”

Firefighters had the blaze under control by 4.44am. No one else was injured.

Police and the fire service will carry out an investigation to establish the cause of the blaze.

The hospital is the same one where a patient was tested for Ebola yesterday after returning from West Africa. The patient tested negative.
