First time in 70 years Castle Esplanade seen without giant Tattoo seating structure in May

The first Edinburgh Tattoo was in 1950.

The empty city centre streets and tourist spots in Edinburgh are becoming more normal as lockdown continues in Scotland.

But come May, one spot has stuck out for being eerily quiet.

At this time of year, the Castle Esplanade is usually boasting elevated seating which is set up each year in preparation for the Edinburgh Tattoo guests.

Yet with current government restrictions, the area lies empty as COVID-19 stalls all public gatherings and events.

It is understood to be the first time in 70 years the castle has no seating set up outside it in the month of May.

The first Tattoo took place in 1950, and elevated seating was brought in the year after, according to a spokeswoman for Historic Environment Scotland.

She said the current stands were unveiled in 2011 replacing seating that had been modelled on the Munich Olympics.
