Author Diana Gabaldon, whose novels have sold more than 28 million copies to date, had been due to speak at the event, which was expected to attract attendees from around the world, in June.

However the university, which instigated the first event of its kind anywhere in the world, said it had made the “difficult decision” to cancel the event due to concerns about coronavirus.

It has also cancelled a separate event due to take place next month to mark the 100th anniversary of the birth of the Glasgow poet Edwin Morgan.

It is hoped that both events can be rescheduled for a later date.

A statement from the university said: “We are very disappointed that we are unable to hold these events at the moment and know this disappointment will also be shared by those hoping to attend.

“But we feel it’s the right decision based on the information we have today relating to the global outbreak.”
