Coronavirus in Scotland: 56 new deaths as country records 1,357 cases in 24 hours

A total of 56 deaths have been reported in the last 24 hours as Scotland sees a rise of 1,357 new cases of coronavirus since yesterday.

John Swinney gave the update on today's figures offering his 'deepest condolences' to those who have lost loved ones as a result of the virus.

Of the new cases, 433 were confirmed in Greater Glasgow and Clyde, 267 in Lanarkshire, 163 in Lothians, 148 in Fife and 101 in Tayside

The remaining 245 cases were spread across seven other health board areas.

To date, 1,228 people are being treated for Covid-19 in hospital, an increase of 21 from yesterday, and 96 people are in intensive care, a decrease of 2 from yesterday, having recently tested positive for the virus.

A total of 79,017 in Scotland are confirmed to have had the virus since the start of the outbreak in March, according to government figures.

The country’s death toll currently stands at 3,244 under the daily measurement.

“This figure reminds us once again of the heartbreak that that has been caused by this virus,” said Depute First Minister, John Swinney who announced the figures at today’s Coronavirus briefing.

The new 1,357 cases represents 5.7 per cent of new tests that were carried out yesterday.
