Coronavirus in Scotland: 1,656 cases recorded in Scotland today as total vaccinated passes 300,000

A total of 1,656 new cases of coronavirus have been recorded across Scotland in the past 24 hours.

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon also announced the country has recorded a further 92 deaths from coronavirus.

She said that cases in Scotland ‘appear to have stabilised’ and ‘may even be declining’ due to lockdown restrictions however pointed out that hospital admissions due to Covid-19 are 30% higher than in April 2020.

Scottish Government statistics indicate the daily test positivity rate is 7.5%, down from 11.1% on Tuesday, when 1,165 positive cases were recorded.

56 people are currently in intensive care, which is an increase of six people from the figure reported yesterday.

There are currently 2,003 people are in hospital with coronavirus which is an increase of 14 patients from yesterday.

To date, 309,909 people have received their first dose of the Covid-19 vaccination.

The death toll under the Scottish Government measure – of people who first tested positive for the virus within the previous 28 days – is now 5,468.

The latest death toll figures under the National Records of Scotland measure is 7,448 as of Sunday.

Between January 11 and January 17, 368 deaths linked to Covid-19 were registered in Scotland, the latest figures show, of which the majority of the deaths happened in hospital (240) with 97 occurred in care homes and 31 in other settings, including at home.

A total of 166,583 people have tested positive in Scotland since the start of the pandemic.

Ms Sturgeon added that today's figures demonstrate the seriousness of the situation Scotland faces.
