Cancer Research UK released the results of its survey as its “Dry-athletes” gear up to bin booze over January to raise money to help beat cancer.

The survey found more than half of all Scots (58 per cent) plan to make a New Year’s resolution and almost a fifth said they would find alcohol the hardest thing to give up, putting it among the top five.

Cutting down on favourite foods and snacks was also in the top five, with 21 per cent saying they would find eating less the most difficult thing to stick to. Cancer Research UK launched Dryathlon for the first time last year when more than 33,500 people signed up across the UK and raised £4 million for the charity.

Dryathletes taking part pledge to drop drinking for a month and donate the money to Cancer Research UK.
