Fans who attended Rangers celebration have tested positive for Covid

Some people who has tested positive for coronavirus in the Glasgow area have admitted to attending mass celebrations after Rangers won the Scottish Premier League.

Scotland’s chief medical officer Dr Gregor Smith said that a “small number” of people contacted by Test and Protect after receiving a positive test for the virus had admitted to being part of the crowds which took to the streets of Glasgow at the beginning of the month.

Dr Smith said that local authorities in the Central Belt of Scotland were showing the highest level of cases at the moment – in particular in Glasgow, with six council areas sitting at more than 100 cases per 100,000 of population in the past seven days.

He said: “One of the things we are seeing in the conversations through Test and Protect is that there is certainly a small number of people who are very honest – and we are very grateful for their honesty – who are saying they were part of those celebrations.

Rangers fans took to the streets after the team won the league.

"And that’s allowing us to make sure we can then contact people who they have been in contact with and ask them to isolate.”

First Minister Nicola Sturgeon added: “There’s been a very small number of cases found through the case management system associated with the gatherings at Rangers, there may be more.”

She said that the “slight uptick” in cases over the past week to 4,074 compared to 3,601 in the week before that could also be driven by the return of schools, as well as people getting tired of living under lockdown restrictions.
