Ex-Celtic star compares Steven Gerrard's Rangers record to Ronny Deila

Kris Commons believes Rangers have still underachieved under Steven Gerrard despite winning their first title in ten years this season.

The Ibrox club ended their long wait for a major trophy this campaign with a dominant performance in the Scottish Premiership, which they managed to have wrapped up by early March, and still have the chance to go the full league season undefeated.

However, Sunday’s penalty shoot-out defeat to St Johnstone means the wait for a triumph in the cups will continue for Gerrard and his men. The manager has yet to win either the Betfred Cup or Scottish Cup since arriving in Glasgow and hasn’t even reached the final of the latter.

Former Celtic star Commons reckons Gerrard’s overall trophy record at Rangers isn’t good enough and pointed out the fact that Ronny Deila, often viewed as an underachieving Parkhead boss, still managed to a league-and-cup double.

Commons wrote in his Daily Mail column: “Make no mistake, the defeat to St Johnstone yesterday will have hurt Gerrard. He knows that it will raise fresh scrutiny around himself and his players. Success in the league does not make Rangers immune to criticism.

“Gerrard has won one trophy in the space of three seasons. It’s not a particularly great return.

"For goodness’ sake, even Ronny Deila managed to win a Double. In fact, it would have been a Treble had it not been for a horrendous handball decision against Inverness in the Scottish Cup. Clearly, Rangers and Gerrard are not the finished article.”
