Watch: Scottish winners announced at virtual national film awards hosted by David Walliams

Two Scottish schools were announced as award-winners at a national film awards ceremony hosted by David Walliams.

The 2020 Into Film Awards celebrate talent and hard work of young filmmakers and film enthusiasts from schools across the UK.

Larbert High School in Larbert, Falkirk, won Into Film Club of the Year (ages 13+) and Castleton Primary School in Castlemilk, Glasgow, won the Audience Choice Award for their short film It's Just Not Fair! which was made by P4 pupils and looked at what it's like to live in a town without a supermarket.

The annual event focuses on young talent from children and young people aged five to 19 years old who have demonstrated impressive achievements in filmmaking and film reviewing.

With 40 regular members the film club at Larbert High appears to be a popular part of the school’s curriculum. The pupils in attendance host discussions on film, participate in competitive in-house reviewing competitions and get hands-on with filmmaking.

Larbert High also has a pupil-produced podcast through which the club members share their opinions about film.

The Audience Choice Award - voted for by online audiences and sponsored by Netflix - was welcomed by Castleton Primary. Their mini documentary ‘It’s Just Not Fair’ is born from their frustration at not having a local supermarket in the town. With the nearest supermarket over an hour on foot and nearly £10 by taxi, the film is a rallying cry to the big supermarket chains.

The ceremony was due to take place at a live event at Odeon Leicester Square, but coronavirus restrictions meant the event, which would have seen more than 400 school children in attendance alongside stars of the film and TV industry, could not take place.

Into Film Scotland Programme Manager Kirsty Gallacher said; “This has been an unbelievably challenging year for us all, but the commitment and work of our Scottish leaders who continue to support their learners experiences with film never fails to amaze me. That is why we are incredibly proud and offer our warmest congratulations to all the winners of 2020 – now more than ever it is important to acknowledge and celebrate these fantastic achievements.”

In total, eleven awards were handed out to winners across the UK.
