A report, to go before members of the council’s education committee next Thursday, warns that primary schools are facing an increase of almost 19 per cent in pupil numbers while secondary rolls are expected to rise by an average of 4.3 per cent.

The report by Maria Walker, the director of education, learning and leisure, states that the latest predictions represent a “significant shift” in previous forecasts which pointed to a more stable overall school population.

She said: “The overall forecast increase in school rolls means that it is likely that there will be significant financial implications arising from changes in the school rolls over the coming years.”
