Tribute single for Keane Wallis-Bennett released

The tune “Keane’s Song” was written by several of her friends with support from the school’s chaplaincy just two days after she died at Edinburgh’s Liberton High Schoolon April 1.

It was made available to download on Monday, and is a celebration of the 12-year-old as well as a chance for her friends to express how much they miss her.

Keane’s Girls penned the song at Liberton Northfield church after it was opened up for school pupils to have somewhere to reflect in the days after her death.

The idea was proposed after one of the chaplains started playing a guitar and a group of first year pupils overheard and suggested the idea of a song about Keane.

Throughout the evening the pupils continued to write the song which was later sung at a memorial service in Liberton Northfield the following week.

It was also sung at Keane’s funeral service later in the month.

Keane’s Song by Keane’s Girls will help raise money for a planned memorial garden on the school’s grounds.

Taking part in the charity single is Aimee McCauley, close friend of Keane.

Aimee, 13, said: “I have known Keane since I was little, we had lots of fun times together.

“The song means a lot to me because when I’m sad, I can play the song and it makes me smile and remember all the good times.

“I miss her loads.”

Friend Megan O’Hara, 13, said: “I can’t believe we’ve done this. Who would think we would go from writing the song in the church to help us cope, to it being on iTunes.

“Keane would love it.”

Keane’s mum, Abbie Wallis, was overwhelmed by the hard work to create the song.

She said: “Keane’s friends have worked incredibly hard the past few months to make this happen and it would mean the world to myself and my family that everyone supports them by downloading the song.”

Keane’s big sister, Rebecca Nicholson-Bennett, tweeted her support from Melbourne, Australia.

It said: “She loved music so I’m sure she’s excited for the single release. Do my baby sister proud :)”.

Headteacher Stephen Kelly said: “Coming together and recording the song is a very special way for Keane’s friends to remember her by.

“We’ve been blown away by the community response in support of the school, they’ve been absolutely fantastic and I hope everyone takes the opportunity to download the song and raise additional funds for the memorial.”

Keane tragically died after an unstable wall collapsed on top of her in her school’s changing rooms.

The gym hall where she died has since been demolished and there are plans to build a dance studio in its place.
