Scottish studies take step forward

A SCHOOL qualification in Scottish studies has taken a step closer, with calls for it to feature in the curriculum.

Learning minister Alasdair Allan confirmed the award is among recommendations made by a specially-convened group.

The group suggested that Scottish studies should be “embedded” at all stages of school and called for the Scottish Qualifications Authority to investigate how the award may be set up.

Dr Allan said: “A survey last year showed that 90 per cent of the public are on board with this approach.

“I am pleased that the Scottish Studies Working Group has suggested a sensible and workable set of recommendations including changes to Higher English exams to ensure that every pupil taking them will study Scottish, as well as other, texts.”
