Scandal-hit school under microscope

THE Care commission is working with staff at a scandal-hit school to "ensure the safety" of pupils.

Last month, the Evening News revealed that Ashley Turnell, 36, was struck off the teaching register for having sex with a male pupil while he worked at St Mary's Music School in Edinburgh.

And earlier last year, house master Ryan Deneven-Lewis, 27, was convicted of having sex with a female pupil and behaving indecently towards another.

Ronnie Hill, the Care Commission's director of children's services regulation, said: "We have been working with the staff and management to ensure the safety and wellbeing of all pupils."

Turnell, of Ardmillan Terrace, Gorgie, was convicted at Edinburgh Sheriff Court of having sex with the boy between 1 December, 2007 and 1 April, 2008.

The General Teaching Council for Scotland ruled that Turnell's relationship had caused "actual harm" and he has been removed from the teaching register.
