£150,000 for top jobs at teaching unions

SCOTLAND’S two largest teaching unions are seeking to fill senior positions with a combined salary of around £150,000.

The Educational Institute of Scotland, which represents around 55,000 teachers, is looking for a new general secretary to replace Ronnie Smith, who announced his decision to retire last week.

The position, which commands a salary of £84,513 to £92,853, is one of Scotland’s key education posts and is being advertised just weeks after Scottish teachers took part in their first nationwide strike in 25 years. The other post, depute general secretary of the Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association, attracts a salary of £62,600.

Both unions took part in the 30 November mass walkout over changes to teachers’ pensions, which will see them contributing more and working longer.
