New chief executive to head independent teachers’ body

A NEW chief executive has been announced to lead 
Scotland’s independent self-regulating professional body for teaching.

Kenneth Muir, strategic director for school years at Education Scotland, will take up the General Teaching Council for Scotland post at the end of September when current chief executive Anthony Finn, retires.

The GTCS was granted independent status in April 2012 by the Scottish Government.

His remit will be to oversee the continuation of the council’s key policy initiatives, including the successful implementation of professional update, which becomes mandatory for all teachers from 2014.

GTCS convener David Drever said: “I am very confident that Ken Muir’s leadership will ensure that GTCS remains central to the health and progress of the teaching profession”.

Mr Muir said: “This is an exciting time in Scottish education and I am committed to GTC Scotland continuing to work closely with key partners to meet challenges we face.”
