Janitor racks up a solution for scooters

AN EAST Lothian janitor has designed a scooter rack for schools in the area.

Ian Robertson, janitor at Dunbar Primary School, got fed up with the number of scooters lying around the playground and decided to do something about it. The rack is made out of locally-sourced wood and costs just 50, compared with the average cost of around 650 for a metal scooter rack.

Mr Robertson said: "I looked into metal ones and they were really expensive, so I made my own prototype and stuck it in a corner. The kids really wanted to use it instead of leaving scooters lying around."

East Lothian Council cycling officer, Iain Reid, said: "Scooting to school for many East Lothian children is seen as the next stage in active travel after walking. However, safe storage had become a problem and the standard scooter racks were too expensive to purchase."
