Cumbernauld has two nominees for this year's Young Scot Awards

Greenfaulds High project Làn Chomais and Condorrat teenager Shannon Henderson have been named as finalists in the Young Scot Awards.

Làn Chomais have showcased the Gaelic language in a different light

As part of the Year of Young People 2018, Scotland set out to inspire and celebrate young people across the country by showcasing their accomplishments and contributions to their communities.

The Làn Chomais project has been nominated in the Arts category. The group produces new Gaelic music and have showcased the Gaelic language in a different light.

The group has represented Greenfaulds High and North Lanarkshire Council at several national educational events, performed for the Deputy First Minister, were showcased at the NLC Learning Festival, and the first ever Live at the Loch festival.

Shannon (17) is nominated in the Young Hero Category. After falling pregnant at 14, Shannon was inspired by her daughter to excel at school and university.

She has overcome adversity and has succeeded in juggling motherhood, school, a part time job and volunteering at a soup kitchen to raise funds for the Teenage Cancer Trust.

Earlier this year Shannon was awarded the Scottish Schools’ Young Writer of the Year by penning a powerful essay about the struggles and joys of becoming a teenage mum.
