Boroughmuir High School reopens after bomb scare

Boroughmuir High School has been reopened after a bomb scare closed it early this morning.

A large section of Viewforth was cordoned off as a heavy police presence flooded the area.

Around 10 police cars were at the scene as pupils were evacuated as they sang Christmas carols.

The school confirmed S1 to S4 pupils had been relocated to St Oswald’s Hall - which the school uses an annex as its drama department- as a precaution.

S5 and S6 pupils were sent home and were told to report back at lunchtime to the Dominion Cinema, not the school, where there was a planned trip.

Police confirmed the school had been closed.

News of the closure spread rapidly on social networking sites.

Early comments suggested the scare was the work of a pupil, acting alone.

The school’s catchment area in the south side of the city, includes Bruntsfield, Buckstone, and South Morningside Primary Schools. The school has over 1100 pupils.

In 2011 Boroughmuir’s exam results were the forth best state school results in Scotland.

A new school building building, to replace the existing 100 year-old structure - was proposed by Edinburgh City Council in January this year.

It is due to open in 2016.
