Ban on foreign students for two language schools

TWO language schools in Edinburgh are among hundreds of private colleges that have been banned from bringing foreign students into the UK under moves to tighten up the immigrationsystem.

The Hamilton School of English and Inlingua Edinburgh were among 450 institutions identified by the Home Office.

Immigration minister Damian Green said widespread abuse of the student visa system, the most common way for migrants from outside the European Uinion to get into the UK, had gone on for too long. The Home Office said more than 11,000 international students were being brought into the country each year, with many colleges either failing to produce records of attendance or checking qualifications.

Mr Green said: “Too many institutions were offering international students an immigration service rather than an education, and too many students have come to the UK with the aim of getting work and bringing over family members.

“Only first-class education providers should be given licences to sponsor international students.”
