Awards show schools are a class apart

TWO Lothians schools have been honoured in this year's Scottish Education Awards.

Mid Calder Primary School in West Lothian picked up an award for learning through technology, while Mary Lee, from the Royal Blind School in Edinburgh, won the lifetime achievement award.

Eleven schools and four individuals from across Scotland were recognised in total in this year's awards.

Education secretary Michael Russell said: "The reality of Scottish education is that we have hundreds of thousands of good pupils, taught by tens of thousands of excellent teachers within thousands of great schools.

"The Scottish Education Awards gives us a chance to put the spotlight on some of this good work – so often unheralded – that is taking place in schools right across the country.

"As I regularly meet with teachers, pupils and parents I am always struck by the enthusiasm young people have for learning, which is a testament to the support of their teachers.

"Education that is enjoyable, relevant and applicable to modern life is at the heart of our approach through the Curriculum for Excellence."
