Edinburgh College: Over a hundred students sign a petition as college asks some students to sit exams on campus

Students at Edinburgh College have launched a petition to stop the institution from holding exams on campus.

The petition was started after a message from the college that said a small number of essential courses would hold their exams on campus.

Despite it only being a small number of exams that require students on campus, concerns have been raised about the impact on students who have been studying online for the best past of a year.

"Most students haven’t met any of their class members or lecturers this educational year, so to put them in a room filled with people they’ve never met on a day where they are most stressed will certainly cause more anxiety.

“Many students, having thought that the whole course would be online, applied even though they live far away from the colleges, therefore they may have to spend over an hour on public transport to get there, causing more risk factors in terms of catching COVID-19.

“We as students, concerned for our and our families health, as well as our grades being lowered as a result of being used to remote learning, need your help to convince Edinburgh College to let us sit exams remotely.”

An Edinburgh College spokesperson said: “In line with government guidance, the College plans to hold a limited number of practical-based and closed-book assessments on campus, where this activity is essential to a student completing their course and cannot be delivered online.

“All on-campus activity will be undertaken in line with the latest government guidance and any students that are required to come onto campus will be given prior notice. Health and safety procedures will be in place across campuses. Before attending campuses, students will be provided with

the appropriate support and health and safety guidance.

“The health and safety of our students and staff remains the College’s priority. We will continue to follow government guidance and to support students to successfully complete their studies.”

The petition has already attracted over a hundred signatures.
