Waitrose now new publisher of The Good Food Guide

UPMARKET grocer Waitrose has become the new publisher of The Good Food Guide after buying the publication from the Which? consumer advice group.

The acquisition, for an undisclosed sum, includes the restaurant guide’s website as well as the print version, which was launched 63 years ago.

Rupert Thomas, marketing director at the employee-owned supermarket, said: “The Good Food Guide has a loyal following among our customers and we will continue to operate it as an independent authority on eating out within the UK.”

The guide was launched in 1951 and was first compiled by classical scholar and crime writer Raymond Postgate, who recruited an army of volunteers to inspect restaurants anonymously after he was appalled by the dining experience in post-war Britain. He remained as editor until 1971.

Elizabeth Carter, the guide’s current consultant editor, said: “We will be offering the same high-calibre, knowledgeable restaurant reviews which have helped the guide become the respected publication it is today. Joining the Waitrose family marks a new chapter in its prestigious history.”

Waitrose, part of the John Lewis Partnership, has 294 stores and also publishes a weekly lifestyle and recipes guide, along with a monthly magazine.
