Speaking after a meeting with poultry farmers from across the country affected by the restructuring of the 2 Sisters Food Group, NFUS president Nigel Miller said producers were concerned that Scottish chicken production would remain vulnerable while the bulk of processing was controlled by one group.
The union has also said it is to seek legal advice and support for negotiating compensation for producers who have been affected by the immediate termination of their supply contracts – many of whom had invested heavily to meet supply requirements.
Miller also stressed that producers should stick together: “Working together must be the best way forward to secure progress.”
He said that it had been agreed that a Scotland-wide producer association should be established with support from SAOS – and a steering group had already been formed.
“Exploring the establishment of a new processing company is now on the agenda”, he said.
Miller also stated that the union was to open further high-level talks with the major retailers which would assess the fallout of the current situation and secure a future for producers. He added that the union would also seek to improve communications with the 2 Sisters Food Group.
