TV programme drives interest in SFP auction

IT WAS not the intended consequence of the BBC programme but there has been an increased interest in the final single farm payment entitlements sale of the season being held on Friday by Aberdeen & Northern Marts at the Thainstone Centre, Inverurie.

The recent TV documentary highlighted the fact that these entitlements – which bring with them subsidy payments – could be bought by those outwith the farming industry.

Friday’s sale is the last opportunity this year to buy entitlements at auction before the 2 April deadline to guarantee a 2012 payment.

There are a total of 17,120 hectare units on offer at the Thainstone auction. They are in 24 lots with values ranging from €0.33 per hectare unit to €836.04 per hectare unit.

Speaking yesterday, Alan Donald of Aberdeen & Northern Marts said: “The TV programme has certainly sparked a great deal of inquiries from people wanting to find out more about buying entitlements.

“We have a large selection of entitlements with a wide range of values to suit all buyers and are anticipating a good demand.”
