McCroskie joined the Glasgow-based company – which makes the Cutty Sark and Famous Grouse blends and Highland Park and The Macallan single malts – in 2009 and was promoted to the post of commercial director in 2011, with responsibility for Africa, Asia, Europe, the Middle East and India.

He had previously worked at Maxxium UK, the sales and distribution joint venture owned by Edrington and Beam Global, the New York-listed maker of whiskies including Ardmore, Laphroaig and Teacher’s.

Chief executive Ian Curle said “I’m delighted to welcome Scott to the board. His experience and leadership will be great assets as Edrington continues to develop internationally.”

Edrington, which also owns the Brugal rum label, credited McCroskie with its rapid move into emerging markets, which included opening an office in Johannesburg in South Africa.

The company – which is owned by the Robertson Trust, a body that last year donated £14.7 million to charities – recently signed deals with Coca Cola Hellenic (CCH) and Les Grands Chais de France to promote its products in Eastern Europe and North Africa respectively.

CCH – which was created in 2000 through the merger of Greece-based Hellenic Bottling and London-based Coca-Cola Beverages – bottles and sells the eponymous soft drink in 28 countries and this week added a listing on the London Stock Exchange to its market presence in Athens and New York.
