Campaign aimed at checking origins of pork is run

British pig producers have this week run a campaign aimed at checking the origins of pork being sold by major supermarkets and catering firms.

The campaign by the National Pig Association continues their actions against pork produced on European Union farms that do not comply with animal welfare regulations.

Pig producers in this country saw sow stalls banned unilaterally by the UK government 14 years ago but similar legislation in Europe only came inthis January after a ten year lead in.

Latest figures from Brussels indicate that more than 60 per cent of European Union countries still have not fully complied with the Europe’s sow stalls ban.

Exercise Compliance involves selecting imported pork products at random and asking the British companies that sell them to trace them back to their farms of origin — to prove the farms have implemented the stalls ban.
