Celtic caretaker boss John Kennedy speaks out against European Super League plans

John Kennedy believes a European Super League would be ‘stripping away’ the traditions of football as the Celtic caretaker boss spoke out against the controversial plans.

It was confirmed on Sunday evening that 12 of Europe’s biggest clubs – the ‘big six’ in England, along with three from both Spain and Italy – would be looking to form a breakaway league.

Supporters from across the continent have reacted with fury at the proposals, which are widely viewed as a means of protecting financial interests of a few clubs at the expense of competition.

Earlier on Tuesday, Rangers assistant boss Gary McAllister condemned the idea of an ESL and expressed his disappointment with former club Liverpool for being a member of the breakaway 12.

Later in the day, Kennedy echoed the sentiments of his Old Firm adversary, saying it flies in the face of what football is supposed to be about – the supporters.

Speaking to the media ahead of Celtic’s midweek meeting with Aberdeen, the interim manager said: “It’s not for me. It goes against what football is traditionally about: the support, the fans, the community.

“It’s just a case of the rich trying to get richer. It becomes about greed at that point and that isn’t what football is about.

“Football starts around your fans, around your city, around your community and this is just stripping all of that away to look after the richer clubs.

“I certainly wouldn't support it. I doubt anyone at our club would support it with the traditions we have.”
